MOVES: Details make the design

Infrastructure and transportation are having a moment in media coverage and political efforts. These umbrella terms mostly bring ports, bridges, and roads to mind, but they also include something in Air Sciences’ wheelhouse: MOVES, the MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator, developed and funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Now in its third iteration, MOVES provides a snapshot of tailpipe emissions for on- and off-road motor vehicles. The model encompasses six common air pollutants (ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, lead, sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide, known collectively as criteria air pollutants), greenhouse gases, and hazardous air pollutants.

Oregon DEQ’s Non-road Diesel Emission Inventory

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has issued the final Oregon Nonroad Diesel Equipment Survey and Emissions Inventory, completed with the help of Eastern Research Group, Inc. (ERG); Good Company LLC; and Oak Leaf Environmental, Inc. The aim of this study was to generate Oregon-specific data of non-road equipment characteristics, such as: engine age, activity rate, fuel consumption, and geographic distribution.

Rising global temperatures have increased the frequency and intensity of wildfires worldwide, especially in northern and temperate forests. These extreme fires have sparked significant legal claims affecting agriculture, forestry, tourism, and infrastructure. Accurately understanding wildfire smoke dispersion is vital in legal disputes to identify which fires caused specific impacts and to gauge their effects amid… Read more: Advanced Wildfire Smoke Tracking for Legal Clarity and Support, Part II

In recent decades, wildfire size and intensity worldwide have increased significantly alongside rising global temperatures. Scientific studies using satellite data over the past 20 years show that extreme wildfires have more than doubled in frequency and intensity globally, particularly in northern and temperate forests such as western North America, boreal forests of northern North America… Read more: Advanced Wildfire Smoke Tracking for Legal Clarity and Support, Part I
